calcospherite

Full Definition

A pathological structure consisting of concentrically laminated calcium deposits that appear as rounded, basophilic structures on routine histological examination. Calcospherites are commonly found in oligodendrogliomas and some other CNS tumors, where they may be numerous and serve as a diagnostic clue. They differ from psammoma bodies in their concentric laminated appearance and are typically larger and more irregular. Von Kossa staining can confirm their calcific nature.
