Chromatin condensation refers to the pathological alteration of nuclear chromatin from its normal dispersed pattern to a clumped, hyperchromatic appearance. This change represents cellular stress, injury, or the early stages of cell death and is commonly observed in various neuropathological conditions including ischemia, toxic injury, and degenerative processes. The condensed chromatin appears as dark, irregularly distributed clumps within the nucleus on routine hematoxylin and eosin staining, contrasting with the normal fine, evenly distributed chromatin pattern of healthy neurons. Recognition of this finding helps pathologists assess tissue viability and identify areas of cellular damage in nervous system specimens.
