Full Definition

The ependymal lining consists of a single layer of ciliated epithelial cells that forms the inner surface of the cerebral ventricles and the central canal of the spinal cord. These specialized cells play crucial roles in cerebrospinal fluid production, circulation, and brain homeostasis. In pathological conditions, the ependymal lining may show various changes including loss, disruption, reactive proliferation, or neoplastic transformation. Ependymal denudation often occurs in hydrocephalus, inflammatory conditions, or periventricular lesions. The integrity of the ependymal lining is important for maintaining the blood-brain barrier and proper CSF dynamics. Pathological examination of this structure provides valuable information about ventricular system pathology.
