Immunohistochemical marker (epithelial membrane antigen) used to identify ependymal cells and certain brain tumors.

Full Definition

EMA staining refers to immunohistochemical detection of epithelial membrane antigen, a glycoprotein expressed on the surface of epithelial cells and certain neural tissues. In neuropathology, EMA is particularly useful for identifying ependymal cells and their neoplastic counterparts, showing characteristic dot-like paranuclear positivity in ependymomas. The staining pattern helps differentiate ependymomas from other glial tumors and is part of the standard immunohistochemical panel for brain tumor diagnosis.
