Full Definition

The intricate meshwork of unmyelinated axons, dendrites, and glial processes that fills the spaces between neuronal cell bodies in gray matter. In neuropathological examination, the neuropil appears as the background eosinophilic (pink) material in H&E-stained sections. Changes in neuropil density, organization, or staining characteristics can indicate various pathological processes including ischemia, degeneration, or inflammation. The term is essential for describing the microscopic architecture of brain tissue in pathology reports.
