perineuronal satellite

Glial cell positioned closely around a neuron, often indicating pathological change or response to injury.

Full Definition

A glial cell, typically an oligodendrocyte or astrocyte, that is closely apposed to a neuronal cell body in pathological conditions. This arrangement differs from normal glial-neuronal relationships and often indicates neuronal stress, ischemia, or degenerative processes. The presence of perineuronal satellites is a key histopathological finding that editors must distinguish from normal perineuronal oligodendrocytes.

Usage note: Not to be confused with satellitosis, which refers to a specific pattern of glial cell clustering.
