perinuclear halo

Clear cytoplasmic space surrounding the nucleus in certain pathological conditions, often seen in oligodendrogliomas.

Full Definition

A perinuclear halo is a characteristic morphological feature consisting of a clear, unstained cytoplasmic rim around the cell nucleus. This finding is classically associated with oligodendrogliomas, where it results from fixation artifacts and represents cytoplasmic clearing. However, perinuclear halos can also be observed in other conditions including viral infections, metabolic disorders, and as artifacts of tissue processing. The presence and quality of these halos can aid in histopathological diagnosis when considered alongside other morphological features.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from true vacuolation; consider as potential artifact.
