Full Definition

Intraparenchymal hemorrhage refers to bleeding that occurs directly within the brain parenchyma (tissue), distinguishing it from extraaxial hemorrhages such as subdural or epidural hematomas, or intraventricular hemorrhages. This type of hemorrhage can result from various causes including hypertension, arteriovenous malformations, tumors, or trauma. The location and pattern of intraparenchymal hemorrhage can provide important diagnostic clues about its etiology. On CT, acute intraparenchymal hemorrhage appears as a hyperdense mass with surrounding edema.
