Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) refers to bleeding that occurs within the ventricular system of the brain, which contains cerebrospinal fluid. This condition is particularly common in premature infants but can also occur in adults following trauma, hypertensive episodes, or rupture of vascular malformations. The severity is typically assessed using imaging-based grading systems such as the modified Graeb score. IVH can lead to complications including hydrocephalus due to obstruction of CSF flow, and the presence of blood products can cause chemical irritation to surrounding brain tissue.
