rim enhancement

Peripheral ring-like contrast uptake pattern typically seen in abscesses, necrotic tumors, or cystic lesions.

Full Definition

Rim enhancement refers to a characteristic pattern of contrast uptake where enhancement is seen along the periphery of a lesion, creating a ring or rim appearance on post-contrast imaging. This pattern is commonly associated with abscesses, where the rim represents the inflammatory capsule, or with necrotic tumors where viable tissue enhances at the periphery while the necrotic center does not. The thickness and characteristics of the rim can provide diagnostic clues, with thin smooth rims favoring abscesses and thick irregular rims suggesting neoplastic processes.

Usage

Usage note: Describe rim characteristics (thick/thin, smooth/irregular) to aid differential diagnosis.

In Context

  • "The lesion demonstrated thick irregular rim enhancement suggestive of a necrotic tumor." — Contrast-enhanced MRI report
  • "Thin smooth rim enhancement with restricted diffusion favored an abscess over neoplasm." — Differential diagnosis note
