T2-weighted imaging

MRI sequence that highlights fluid-containing structures by emphasizing T2 relaxation properties of tissues.

Full Definition

T2-weighted imaging is a fundamental MRI pulse sequence that produces contrast based on the T2 relaxation times of different tissues. In T2-weighted images, cerebrospinal fluid appears bright (hyperintense), while most brain tissue appears darker. This sequence is particularly valuable for detecting pathology such as edema, inflammation, and certain tumors, which typically appear hyperintense due to increased water content. T2-weighted imaging is essential for comprehensive neurological assessment and is routinely included in most brain MRI protocols.

Usage

Usage note: Always hyphenate when used as an adjective; capitalize T2 but not 'weighted' unless beginning a sentence.

In Context

  • "The T2-weighted imaging revealed hyperintense lesions consistent with demyelinating disease." — Radiology report
