hemiplegia

Complete paralysis of one side of the body, more severe than hemiparesis.

Full Definition

Hemiplegia is complete paralysis affecting one side of the body, representing a more severe manifestation of unilateral motor impairment than hemiparesis. This condition typically results from significant damage to the motor cortex, internal capsule, or corticospinal tract on the opposite side of the brain. Patients with hemiplegia have no voluntary movement in the affected limbs, requiring extensive rehabilitation focusing on compensation techniques, assistive devices, and maximizing function of the unaffected side. Recovery potential varies significantly depending on the underlying cause and extent of neurological damage.

Usage

Usage note: More severe than hemiparesis. Specify affected side (left/right hemiplegia).

In Context

  • "Rehabilitation goals focused on compensation strategies for right hemiplegia." — Treatment planning report
