The Modified Barium Swallow Study (MBSS), also known as videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS), is a dynamic radiographic examination that evaluates all phases of swallowing function in real-time. During the procedure, patients consume various consistencies of barium-coated foods and liquids while being recorded under fluoroscopy, allowing visualization of bolus flow, anatomical structures, and swallowing physiology. The MBSS is considered the gold standard for dysphagia assessment, providing crucial information about aspiration risk, swallowing efficiency, and appropriate dietary recommendations. Speech-language pathologists and radiologists collaborate to interpret findings and develop treatment recommendations.
