Full Definition

The Motor Assessment Scale (MAS) is a performance-based assessment tool specifically designed to measure motor function in stroke patients during rehabilitation. The scale consists of eight items that evaluate upper arm function, hand movements, advanced hand activities, sitting balance, sit-to-stand, walking, upper arm function (different aspect), and general tonus. Each item is scored on a 0-6 scale, with higher scores indicating better motor performance. Unlike impairment-based measures, the MAS emphasizes functional movement patterns that relate directly to activities of daily living. The assessment is widely used in research and clinical practice to track motor recovery and evaluate intervention effectiveness.
