neglect syndrome
A neurological condition where patients fail to attend to or acknowledge stimuli on one side of space, typically following brain injury.
Full Definition
Neglect syndrome, also known as hemispatial neglect or unilateral spatial neglect, is a complex neurological condition most commonly occurring after right hemisphere stroke or brain injury. Patients with neglect fail to report, respond to, or orient toward stimuli presented on the contralesional side of space, despite having intact sensory and motor functions. This condition significantly impacts rehabilitation outcomes and daily functioning, as patients may ignore food on one side of their plate, fail to dress one side of their body, or collide with objects on the affected side. Assessment and treatment approaches include cancellation tasks, line bisection tests, and various therapeutic interventions to improve spatial awareness.
Usage
Usage note: May be shortened to 'neglect' in clinical contexts, but full term preferred in formal documentation.
