Movement and deformation of brain tissue during surgery due to CSF loss and tissue manipulation.

Full Definition

Brain shift refers to the progressive movement and deformation of brain tissue that occurs during neurosurgical procedures as a result of cerebrospinal fluid drainage, tissue removal, gravity, and surgical manipulation. This phenomenon can significantly alter the spatial relationship between anatomical structures, making preoperative imaging less reliable as surgery progresses. Brain shift poses challenges for image-guided navigation systems, as the brain's position may deviate substantially from preoperative scans. Surgeons must account for this dynamic change when planning approaches to deep lesions and may use intraoperative imaging or ultrasound to compensate for tissue displacement and maintain surgical accuracy.
