burr hole

A small circular hole drilled through the skull to access the brain or relieve pressure.

A burr hole is a precisely drilled circular opening in the skull, typically 10-15mm in diameter, created using specialized neurosurgical tools. This minimally invasive access point allows surgeons to insert instruments, drain fluid collections, or relieve intracranial pressure without performing a full craniotomy. Burr holes are commonly used for procedures such as brain biopsies, hematoma evacuation, and placement of intracranial monitoring devices. The procedure requires careful planning to avoid critical brain structures and blood vessels.
