eloquent cortex

Pronunciation: EL-oh-kwent KOR-teks

Brain regions where damage would result in significant neurological deficit affecting speech, movement, or sensation.

Full Definition

Eloquent cortex refers to functionally critical brain areas where surgical injury or removal would result in permanent, clinically significant neurological deficits. These regions include primary motor cortex, primary sensory cortex, language areas (Broca's and Wernicke's areas), and visual cortex. During neurosurgical procedures involving or adjacent to eloquent areas, special precautions such as awake craniotomy, cortical mapping, or intraoperative monitoring may be employed to preserve function while achieving therapeutic goals.

Usage

Usage note: Contrasted with non-eloquent or silent cortex where resection may not cause obvious deficits.

In Context

  • "The tumor's proximity to eloquent cortex necessitated awake craniotomy with cortical mapping." — preoperative planning note
  • "Intraoperative stimulation confirmed the location of eloquent cortex for speech function." — surgical technique description
