An epidural hematoma is an accumulating mass of blood located in the epidural space, between the inner surface of the skull and the outer layer of the dura mater. This condition most commonly occurs following traumatic brain injury when a skull fracture tears the middle meningeal artery or other meningeal vessels. The classic presentation includes an initial loss of consciousness, followed by a lucid interval, then rapid neurological deterioration. Emergency surgical evacuation is often required to prevent brain herniation and death.
