Loss or impairment of normal neurological function resulting from brain injury, disease, or surgical intervention.

A measurable loss or impairment of normal neurological function that can affect motor skills, sensation, cognition, speech, or other neurological capabilities. In neurosurgery, neurological deficits may be present preoperatively due to the underlying pathology, or they may develop as a consequence of surgical intervention despite careful technique. These deficits can be temporary or permanent, and their severity ranges from subtle changes detectable only on detailed examination to profound impairments affecting daily function. Documentation of neurological deficits is crucial for surgical consent, outcome assessment, and medicolegal purposes. Recovery from postoperative deficits may occur through neuroplasticity and rehabilitation.
