neurogenic shock

Distributive shock resulting from severe central nervous system injury causing autonomic dysfunction.

Full Definition

Neurogenic shock is a form of distributive shock that occurs following severe injury to the central nervous system, particularly high spinal cord injuries or severe traumatic brain injury. It results from disruption of sympathetic nervous system function, leading to loss of vascular tone, bradycardia, and hypotension without the typical compensatory tachycardia seen in other forms of shock. Neurogenic shock is characterized by warm, dry skin due to peripheral vasodilation and requires specific management including fluid resuscitation, vasopressors, and treatment of the underlying neurological injury.

Usage note: Distinguish from other shock types by absence of compensatory tachycardia and warm extremities.
