subdural hematoma

Collection of blood between the dura mater and arachnoid membrane, typically resulting from torn bridging veins.

Full Definition

A type of intracranial hemorrhage characterized by blood accumulation in the subdural space, located between the dura mater (outermost brain covering) and the arachnoid membrane. Subdural hematomas commonly result from head trauma that causes tearing of bridging veins crossing the subdural space. They are classified as acute (symptoms within 72 hours), subacute (3-21 days), or chronic (over 21 days), with different presentations and treatment approaches for each type.

Usage

Usage note: Often abbreviated as SDH; distinguish location from epidural (above dura) and subarachnoid (below arachnoid).
