Gamma oscillations are rhythmic neural activity patterns occurring in the 30-100 Hz frequency range, generated by networks of inhibitory interneurons and excitatory pyramidal cells. These oscillations are thought to coordinate distributed neural processing and facilitate feature binding, attention, and consciousness. Abnormal gamma activity has been implicated in various neuropsychiatric disorders including schizophrenia, autism, and Alzheimer's disease, making gamma rhythms an important focus of clinical neuroscience research.
