Non-neuronal cells in the nervous system that provide support and protection for neurons.

Full Definition

Glia, also called glial cells or neuroglia, are non-neuronal cells that maintain homeostasis, form myelin, and provide support and protection for neurons in the central and peripheral nervous systems. Major types include astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, microglia, and Schwann cells. Once thought to be merely supportive, glia are now recognized as active participants in neural function, including synaptic transmission and neural development.
