An experimental epilepsy model where repeated subthreshold electrical stimulation progressively lowers seizure threshold and induces lasting hyperexcitability.

The kindling model is a widely used experimental paradigm for studying epileptogenesis, where repeated application of initially subthreshold electrical stimulation to brain tissue progressively increases seizure susceptibility. Developed by Graham Goddard, this model demonstrates that repeated stimulation of structures like the amygdala or hippocampus can induce permanent changes in neural excitability, eventually leading to spontaneous seizures. The kindling process involves synaptic and structural plasticity changes that mirror those seen in human temporal lobe epilepsy. This model has been instrumental in understanding mechanisms of epilepsy development and testing antiepileptic drugs.
