Cytogenic edema represents brain swelling that results from cellular damage and blood-brain barrier disruption, leading to both intracellular and extracellular fluid accumulation. Unlike pure cytotoxic edema (which is intracellular) or vasogenic edema (which is extracellular), cytogenic edema involves both compartments simultaneously. This type of edema commonly occurs in severe traumatic brain injury and is associated with cellular membrane failure and inflammatory responses.
