Full Definition

Electrocerebral Silence (ECS) refers to the complete absence of electrical brain activity on electroencephalography, characterized by voltages below 2 microvolts when recorded under standardized conditions. ECS may be observed in cases of severe brain injury, deep anesthesia, hypothermia, or drug intoxication. In the context of brain death determination, ECS must be demonstrated under specific technical conditions including appropriate electrode placement, high sensitivity settings, and absence of confounding factors. However, ECS alone is not sufficient for brain death diagnosis and must be correlated with clinical findings.
