Full Definition

Jugular venous oxygen saturation (SjvO2) measures the oxygen saturation of blood draining from the brain via the jugular bulb, providing insight into the balance between cerebral oxygen delivery and consumption. Normal SjvO2 ranges from 55-75%. Values below 55% suggest inadequate oxygen delivery or excessive extraction, potentially indicating cerebral ischemia. Values above 75% may indicate luxury perfusion, brain death, or arteriovenous shunting. SjvO2 monitoring requires retrograde catheterization of the internal jugular vein with positioning in the jugular bulb. This technique provides continuous assessment of global cerebral oxygenation and is particularly valuable in managing patients with traumatic brain injury, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and other conditions affecting cerebral metabolism.
