Full Definition

Lumbar cerebrospinal fluid drainage involves the placement of a catheter in the lumbar subarachnoid space to allow controlled removal of cerebrospinal fluid, thereby reducing intracranial pressure. This technique is particularly useful in patients with communicating hydrocephalus, following subarachnoid hemorrhage, or in cases where ventricular drainage is contraindicated or technically challenging. The procedure requires careful monitoring of drainage volumes and rates to prevent over-drainage and potential complications such as subdural hematoma or tonsillar herniation. Typical drainage rates range from 5-20 mL per hour depending on clinical indication and ICP targets. LCS drainage is contraindicated in patients with mass lesions causing obstructive hydrocephalus due to risk of herniation. The system requires sterile technique and regular assessment for signs of infection or mechanical complications.
