A neurointensive care unit (NICU) is a specialized critical care facility designed specifically for the management of patients with acute neurological emergencies, neurosurgical conditions, and complex neurological disorders requiring intensive monitoring and intervention. These units are staffed by neurointensivists, specialized nurses trained in neurocritical care, and support personnel familiar with neurological conditions. NICUs are equipped with advanced neuromonitoring capabilities including intracranial pressure monitoring, brain tissue oxygen monitoring, continuous EEG, transcranial Doppler ultrasonography, and specialized imaging access. Common conditions managed include stroke, traumatic brain injury, subarachnoid hemorrhage, status epilepticus, brain tumors, and post-neurosurgical patients. The specialized environment allows for rapid recognition of neurological deterioration, implementation of neuroprotective strategies, and coordination of multidisciplinary care including neurology, neurosurgery, neuroradiology, and rehabilitation services.
