Therapeutic hypothermia is a neuroprotective intervention involving the controlled reduction of core body temperature, typically to 32-36°C, to reduce cerebral metabolic demands and limit secondary brain injury. This treatment is most commonly used following cardiac arrest with return of spontaneous circulation, where it has been shown to improve neurological outcomes. The cooling process must be carefully controlled to avoid complications such as arrhythmias, coagulopathy, or electrolyte disturbances. Temperature management includes induction, maintenance, and controlled rewarming phases. Modern protocols often use targeted temperature management rather than deep hypothermia, and the optimal target temperature continues to be refined through ongoing research.
