electrocochleography

Recording of electrical potentials from the cochlea and eighth cranial nerve.

Full Definition

Electrocochleography (ECoChG) is an electrophysiological technique that records electrical potentials generated by the cochlea and auditory nerve in response to acoustic stimuli. The test measures the cochlear microphonic, summating potential, and compound action potential of the auditory nerve. ECoChG requires electrode placement either on the tympanic membrane, in the external auditory canal, or through the tympanic membrane onto the promontory. This test is particularly useful for diagnosing Ménière's disease, acoustic neuromas, and other retrocochlear disorders. The summating potential to action potential ratio is a key diagnostic measure.
