Full Definition

High-frequency oscillations (HFOs) are brain electrical activities with frequencies typically above 80 Hz, subdivided into ripples (80-200 Hz) and fast ripples (200-600 Hz). These oscillations are increasingly recognized as important biomarkers for identifying epileptogenic brain tissue, as they occur more frequently in seizure-generating regions than in normal brain areas. HFOs can be recorded using specialized high-sampling-rate equipment and are thought to reflect hypersynchronous neuronal activity that underlies seizure generation. Their detection and analysis are becoming crucial tools in presurgical epilepsy evaluation and may improve surgical outcomes by better defining resection boundaries.
