Hyperventilation activation is a standard EEG provocation procedure involving 3-5 minutes of controlled deep breathing at approximately 20 breaths per minute. This technique produces hypocapnia (reduced CO2), which can trigger absence seizures, reveal focal abnormalities, or enhance epileptiform discharges that may not be apparent during routine recording. The procedure is contraindicated in patients with certain cardiac or respiratory conditions and requires careful monitoring throughout.
