Spectral analysis is a signal processing technique used in neurophysiology to decompose complex neural signals into their constituent frequency components, revealing the power and distribution of different frequency bands. Using mathematical methods such as Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), this analysis converts time-domain signals into frequency-domain representations, showing how much energy exists at each frequency. In clinical practice, spectral analysis helps quantify abnormal rhythms, assess brain maturation, evaluate sleep stages, and detect subtle changes in brain function that may not be apparent in raw EEG tracings. The technique is particularly valuable for studying oscillatory brain activity and network dynamics.
