Chromogranin A level refers to the quantitative measurement of chromogranin A protein in serum or plasma, serving as a crucial biomarker for neuroendocrine tumors. Elevated levels can indicate the presence of neuroendocrine tumors, monitor disease progression, and assess treatment response. Normal ranges vary by laboratory, but levels are typically elevated in functioning and non-functioning neuroendocrine tumors. However, chromogranin A can also be elevated in non-neoplastic conditions such as renal failure, liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and with proton pump inhibitor use. Serial measurements are more valuable than single values for monitoring tumor behavior and treatment effectiveness.
