Anterior pituitary cells that produce and secrete luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).

Full Definition

Gonadotropes (also called gonadotrophs) are specialized endocrine cells in the anterior pituitary that comprise approximately 10% of the adenohypophyseal cell population and are responsible for synthesizing and secreting the gonadotropins luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). These glycoprotein hormones share a common α-subunit but have distinct β-subunits that confer hormone-specific biological activity. Gonadotropes respond to hypothalamic gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) through pulsatile secretion patterns that are essential for normal reproductive function. They are subject to feedback regulation by gonadal steroids and inhibins. Gonadotrope adenomas are relatively rare but can cause reproductive dysfunction through excessive hormone secretion.
