Full Definition

Paracrine signaling is a form of cell communication in which neuroendocrine cells release signaling molecules that act on adjacent or nearby target cells within the same tissue or organ. Unlike endocrine signaling, which involves hormone transport through the bloodstream to distant targets, paracrine signals have local effects and typically have short half-lives. This type of signaling is particularly important in neuroendocrine tissues where it helps coordinate cellular responses, modulate hormone secretion, and maintain tissue homeostasis. Many neuropeptides and growth factors function as paracrine mediators in neuroendocrine systems.
