Hypothalamic region that produces oxytocin, vasopressin, and corticotropin-releasing hormone.

Full Definition

The paraventricular nucleus (PVN) is a critical neuroendocrine center located in the hypothalamus that synthesizes and releases several important hormones and neuropeptides. It contains magnocellular neurons that produce oxytocin and vasopressin for release from the posterior pituitary, as well as parvocellular neurons that secrete corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and other releasing factors that control anterior pituitary function. The PVN plays essential roles in stress response, water balance, parturition, lactation, and circadian rhythms, making it a key structure in neuroendocrine regulation.
