Blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) contrast forms the foundation of functional MRI by exploiting the magnetic properties of hemoglobin in different oxygenation states. During neural activation, increased metabolic demand initially causes local oxygen extraction, followed by a compensatory increase in cerebral blood flow that overcompensates for the oxygen consumption. This results in a net decrease in deoxyhemoglobin concentration, which reduces local magnetic field inhomogeneities and increases T2*-weighted signal intensity. The resulting hemodynamic response typically peaks 4-6 seconds after neural activation and forms the basis for detecting brain activity through fMRI.
