B0 field inhomogeneity

Spatial variation in the main magnetic field strength that causes signal distortion and artifacts in MRI images.

B0 field inhomogeneity refers to variations in the strength of the main static magnetic field across the imaging volume in MRI scanners. These variations can be caused by imperfections in the magnet design, patient-specific factors such as tissue susceptibility differences, or external ferromagnetic objects. The inhomogeneity leads to signal dropout, geometric distortion, and reduced image quality, particularly in echo planar imaging sequences. Shimming techniques are employed to minimize these effects and improve image uniformity.

Usage note: Always capitalize 'B0' and use 'inhomogeneity' rather than 'inhomogeneity'.
