Isotropic voxels are cubic volume elements in three-dimensional imaging datasets where the spatial resolution is identical along all three axes (x, y, and z). This contrasts with anisotropic imaging where slice thickness differs from in-plane resolution. Isotropic acquisition is particularly important in neuroimaging for accurate volume measurements, 3D reconstructions, and multiplanar reformations. Modern high-resolution MRI protocols increasingly employ isotropic voxels to enable flexible post-processing and eliminate orientation-dependent measurement biases. The trade-off for isotropic resolution is typically longer acquisition times and potentially reduced signal-to-noise ratio.
