Magnetization transfer is an advanced MRI contrast mechanism that exploits the interaction between mobile water protons and protons bound to macromolecules like proteins and lipids. By applying off-resonance radiofrequency pulses, the technique creates contrast that reflects tissue microstructural integrity. The magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) quantifies this effect and is particularly sensitive to myelin content and axonal density. This technique is valuable in multiple sclerosis research, where demyelination significantly reduces MTR values.
