Full Definition

A resting-state network is a collection of brain regions that exhibit temporally coherent, spontaneous fluctuations in BOLD signal during periods when participants are not performing explicit tasks. These networks, including the default mode network, executive control network, and sensorimotor network, represent intrinsic functional connectivity patterns that persist across different states of consciousness. Resting-state analysis has become crucial for understanding brain organization and identifying biomarkers for neurological and psychiatric conditions.
