Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is the most widely used animal model for studying multiple sclerosis and testing potential therapies. The condition is induced in laboratory animals by immunizing them with myelin proteins or peptides, leading to T-cell mediated inflammation and demyelination in the central nervous system. EAE closely mimics many pathological features of human MS, including inflammatory infiltrates, demyelination, and clinical symptoms such as paralysis. Different EAE protocols can model various aspects of MS, from acute monophasic disease to chronic progressive forms.
