Neuroinflammation refers to the inflammatory response that occurs within the central nervous system, characterized by the activation of resident immune cells such as microglia and astrocytes, as well as infiltration of peripheral immune cells. This process involves the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and other inflammatory mediators. While neuroinflammation can be a protective response to injury or infection, chronic neuroinflammation is associated with various neurodegenerative and autoimmune neurological diseases.
