perilesional edema

Fluid accumulation surrounding inflammatory brain lesions, visible on MRI imaging.

Full Definition

Perilesional edema refers to the accumulation of extracellular fluid in brain tissue immediately surrounding inflammatory lesions, particularly common in multiple sclerosis and other neuroinflammatory conditions. This edema appears as hyperintense signal on T2-weighted MRI sequences and can contribute to mass effect and clinical symptoms. The presence and extent of perilesional edema can indicate active inflammation and influence treatment decisions in neuroimmunological disorders.

Usage

Usage note: Always specify the anatomical location when describing perilesional edema in clinical documentation.

In Context

  • "The MRI report noted significant perilesional edema surrounding the new T2 hyperintense lesions in the frontal white matter." — Radiology report
  • "Corticosteroids were administered to reduce perilesional edema and associated mass effect." — Treatment plan
