Th1 cells are a subset of CD4+ T-helper lymphocytes characterized by their production of interferon-gamma, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and interleukin-2, which promote cell-mediated immune responses and macrophage activation. In neuroimmunology, Th1 cells play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory CNS diseases, particularly in the early phases of conditions such as multiple sclerosis and experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis. These cells are capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier and, once activated within the CNS, can recruit and activate resident microglial cells and infiltrating macrophages. The Th1 response is generally considered pro-inflammatory and tissue-destructive, contrasting with the regulatory functions of Th2 cells and regulatory T cells. Understanding Th1 cell biology has led to the development of therapeutic strategies aimed at skewing immune responses away from Th1 dominance in neuroinflammatory conditions.
