Full Definition

MNI (Montreal Neurological Institute) space is a standardized coordinate system used in neuroimaging to enable comparison of brain data across subjects and studies. The MNI template is based on averaged brain anatomy from multiple subjects and provides a common reference frame for reporting brain locations and performing group analyses. Spatial normalization to MNI space allows researchers to combine data from different participants and compare results across studies. The coordinate system uses millimeter units with the origin at the anterior commissure, and locations are reported as (x, y, z) coordinates.

Usage note: Always uppercase 'MNI'; use 'space' not 'template' when referring to coordinate system.
