parcellation

Division of brain tissue into distinct anatomical or functional regions for analysis.

Full Definition

Brain parcellation is the process of subdividing brain tissue into discrete, non-overlapping regions based on anatomical, functional, or connectivity criteria. This fundamental step in neuroinformatics analysis enables region-of-interest studies and network-based analyses. Parcellation schemes can be anatomically-based (using structural landmarks), functionally-based (using activation patterns), or connectivity-based (using white matter tracts). Common atlases include the AAL (Automated Anatomical Labeling) and Desikan-Killiany parcellations, each providing different granularity and regional definitions for neuroimaging studies.
